- Be entertained by four comedic Cantonese Opera excerpts!

The Witty Maid (Opera Excerpt)
(Sabrina Chow as Cun Cao, Henry Lau as Magistrate)
"The Witty Maid" is taken from the opera "Cun Cao Trespasses into The Magistrate's Court". The excerpt goes like this. Having misrepresented to the Magistrate that her mistress (The Prime Minister's daughter) was betrothed to the hero who had turned himself in after saving her mistress from harassment by a bully who happened to be the son of the Minister of the Civil Service, Cun Cao, the witty maid was forced by the Magistrate to bring him to the Prime Minister's residence for confirmation of her testimony. While the Magistrate travelled in a sedan chair, Cun Cao had to walk. On the way Cun Cao was trying to procrastinate so that she could think of a plan to extricate herself. The excerpt shows the various delaying tactics used by Cun Cao culminating in her travelling in the sedan chair while the Magistrate had to go on foot. Cun Cao finally thought of a plan to prevent the Magistrate from meeting her mistress face to face.
Irritating A Magistrate from "Luring A Trumpeteer" (Opera Excerpt)

In "Irritating A Magistrate" Tung Dai was grabbed by the Magistrate's guards and brought before the Magistrate for interview with the view of getting Tung to be his son-in-law. Tung's witty answers convinced the Magistrate that he was the right candidate. However when the Magistrate learned from Tung that he was just a mediocre trumpeteer he was so exasperated that he chased him away.

The Emperor promulgated a decree to choose young and beautiful unmarried ladies to be concubines and courtesans in the Palace. Apprehensive of their daughters being chosen , all parents joined in a mad rush to get suitors for their daughters as they knew that once their daughters were chosen by the Emperor they would not be able to see their loved ones again. A famous trumpeteer Tung Dai, well known for playing ceremonial music at weddings was approached by his wife to play for a family whose daughter she had matched for marriage. Tung refused as he had committed to play for another family. This excerpt showed how Tung's wife tricked Tung into following her by stealing the reed which he had to use to play his instrument.
"Selecting A Son-In-Law"(Opera Excerpt)

"Selecting A Son-In-Law" is taken from the full length opera of the same title. The Story goes like this. A henpecked Magistrate who always depended on his wife to adjudicate cases in his court was in a dilemma when he was faced with a complex case where two complainants were fighting for the hand of a lady for marriage. It so happened that the Magistrate's wife had gone to the temple for prayers. Just as he was being pressed for a decision he heard knocking sound from the panel. Straightaway he realized that his wife had returned home. Without hesitation he dismissed the court and send everyone to the lock up.

抢笛
这是长剧「拉郎配」之精彩片段. 话说皇帝下召, 挑选民间美女入宫，天下父母皆忐忑不安,急为女儿选婿, 掀起一阵「拉郎」热潮. 著名笛手董代因此应接不暇. 其妻以作媒为生亦忙得不可开交. 事有凑巧, 董氏安排了一椿婚事, 须要董代前往吹笛, 而董代亦已接下一舍，分身不下. 于是二人起了争执. 董氏心生一计, 抢去笛咀, 使董代非随她去不可. 由中国国家一级导演梁建中饰董代，新加坡文化奖得主兼敦煌剧坊艺术总监胡桂馨太平绅士饰董氏合演。
戏官
这是长剧「拉郎配」另一精彩片段。一名县官为避免女儿被选入宫，命衙差物色适当人选为东床. 衙差强拉董代入衙应试。县宫见董代对答如流，心花怒放。及后知悉董代身份，大失所望，将董代赶出衙门。由中国国家一级导演梁建中饰董代, 新加坡资深演员刘锦煌饰县官主演.
施计
这是长剧「春草闯堂」之谐趣一幕。话说相阁丫环春草，为救薛玫廷，在公堂强认薛玫廷为宰相女婿。知县为求证, 命春草带他面见相阁千金。知县乘轿, 春草步行。春草无奈, 在路上设计拖延时间, 及至想到一个瞒天过海方法, 才急速回相府. 由新加坡著名丑生谢广源饰县官, 胡桂馨悉心培训之新秀周汶姿饰春草领衔演出。
选女婿
取自同名长剧之谐趣一幕. 一名糊涂县官, 素耒依靠妻子幕后听审. 一日, 其妻出门烧香，忽有两名呆汉入衙投诉，争娶一名少女. 案情错纵复杂. 正当县官束手无策，忽闻敲板之声，知悉其妻已回家，旋即入向请示, 然后再升堂下判, 案才了结。由谢广源扮演县官, 梁錦和饰官太领衔演出。
