(Featuring Frances Wong as Tang Bo Hu and Mandy Chung as Qiu Xiang and Samuel Wong as Chief Abbot)
A household story entitled "Three Smiles To A Marriage" the theme of a popular Cantonese Opera comedy written by the famous Hong Kong playwright the late Mr Tang Di Sheng. This excerpt narrates one of the romantic encounters of the famous scholar Tang Bo Hu (AD 1470- 1523) of the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). Tang Bo Hu, noted for both his literary and painting skills met Qiu Xiang, one of the maids accompanying the wife of the Minister for Civil Service offering prayers in a temple. Attracted by the beauty of this petite maid, Tang used several ways and means to befriend her and even made advances to her. Qiu Xiang, not knowing that he was Tang Bo Hu, rebuked him for his misconduct. She even went to the extent of cursing him. As Tang intended to marry her he tolerated Qiu Xiang's insults and even asked for her name before she left. Qiu Xiang did not reply; but instead responded with a sweet smile which further encouraged Tang to follow her.
- Picking Up The Purple Hairpin
(Featuring Ang Cheng Hong as Li Yu , Annie Wong as Huo Xiao Yu and Kathleen lee as maid)
This excerpt is extracted from the full length Cantonese Opera "Romance Of The Purple Hairpin" written by the late Mr Tang Di Sheng on the romance between a scholar Li Yi (AD 748-817) of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) and a songstress Huo Xiao Yu both of whom were secret admirers of each other.
In this excerpt Li Yi, after sitting the Imperial Examination, was trying to locate the residence of his secret idol Huo Xiao Yu. He had never met her; all he knew was that she liked to wear purple clothings. It so happened that Huo Xiao Yu was searching for her purple hairpin she had accidentally dropped on the street. Li who had picked up the hairpin and surmised that she must be Huo Xiao Yu as she was dressed in purple, used the hairpin as the subject matter to strike up a conversation. After identifying themselves both Li Yu and Huo Xiao Yu were surprised that they had finally met. Feeling abashed Huo Xiao Yu quickly returned to her house. Li Yu followed so that he could formally ask her mother for the hand of Huo Xiao Yu in marriage.
- Errors At Hua Tian
(Featuring Frances Wong as Bian Ji, Sabrina Chow as Cun Lan, Chan Mei Leng as Liu Yu Ying)
This episode is taken from the Cantonese Opera "Jubilation At Hua Tian" a comedy of errors also written by the late Tang Di Sheng. In this episode a maid Cun Lan took the initiative to be the matchmaker of the marriage between her mistress Liu Yu Ying and a poor scholar Bian Ji whom they met at the town of Hua Tian where Bian Ji was selling his calligraphic works for a living. Cun Lan then instructed a messenger to deliver to Bian Ji a letter indicating consent by her mistress' parents and inviting Bian Ji to their residence to formalise the marriage. Unfortunately the messenger mistakenly handed over the letter to another person reputed to be the bully of Hua Tian.
- A Romantic Entrapment
(Featuring Chan Mei Yin (Kreta Ayer CC) as Cheng Ji Cang, Lo Siu Ling as Liu Yu Er, Henry Lau as Su Dong Bo, and Annie Wong as Su Jin Cao)
This excerpt is taken from the full length Cantonese Opera "When The Lioness Roars" a comedy written by the late Tang Di Sheng based on a household story of a henpecked scholar Cheng Ji Cang in the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279)
The famous poet Su Dong Bo (AD 1037-1101) having lost in a pitch for literary skills to Liu Yu Er, wife of Cheng Ji Cang, before the Emperor, decided to play a prank on her by setting up a trap for Cheng Ji Cang whom he knew had the propensity to fall for beautiful women. He arranged for Cheng Ji Cang to rendezvous with his pretty cousin Su Jin Cao. Cheng Ji Cang was unable to resist the charm of Su Jin Cao; and not knowing that his wife had sent a messenger to trail after him, he gave her the jade pendant with the promise to take her as his mistress. The jade pendant was a gift to Liu Yu Er from the Emperor as her prize in defeating So Dong Bo and she in turn presented it to Cheng Ji Cang as a token of her love. Liu Yu Er was furious when she heard what had transpired between her husband and Su Jin Cao; and she decided to punish Cheng Ji Cang.
- A Just punishment
(Featuring Chan Mei Yin (Kreta Ayer CC) as Cheng Ji Cang, Lo Siu Ling as Liu Yu Er, Henry Lau as Su Dong Bo)
This episode is the sequel to the above excerpt. Cheng Ji Cang returned home, happy and jubilant, He tried to please his wife by serving her tea. He was shocked when Liu Yu Er told him that it would be more appropriate for the other woman to serve her. He tried to exculpate himself by saying that he was merely offering a helping hand to the woman who was trapped in the snow. However when Liu Yu Er asked for the jade pendant, he knew that his cover was blown. He had no choice but to let the cat out of the bag. Liu Yu Er was so furious that she hit him with a stick and sent him out to the garden to kneel beside the pond as a punishment. At this juncture, Su Dong Bo appeared and instigated Cheng Ji Cang to divorce his wife on the grounds that she had not given birth to any child thus constituting an infringement against the prevailing rules of the city of Huangzhou. Without thinking Cheng Ji Cang went straight into the room and demanded a divorce from Liu Yu Er citing the grounds quoted by Su Dong Bo. This time, Liu Yu Er decided to teach both Cheng Ji Cang and Su Dong Bo a lesson as Su Dong Bo had misquoted the rules which she was only too familiar as a woman scholar of Huangzhou. The rules stated that a husband could only divorce his wife under such circumstances provided the husband had no other male relatives; and Cheng Ji Cang did not come under this proviso. The excerpt ends with Liu Yu Er proceeding to file charges against the panicked Cheng Ji Cang and Su Dong Bo.
