Synopsis
"Dream At The Peony Pavillion" is adapted from the famous "zaju" written by the renowned playwright Tang Hsien Zhu in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1550 - 1616). Known as "The Peony Pavillion" it is one of the best four classical Chinese Operas on "dreams" written by him.
The story tells the romance between Du Li Niang, daughter of the Prime Minister, and Liu Meng Mei, a scholar she met in her dream which later really materialised. A popular story, it is presented in almost every Chinese Opera form. Recently, a "Kun Opera" company from Shanghai staged its rewritten version of this opera with greater emphasis on its exotic components, at the Lincoln Center in New York and won impeccable reviews.
CTC's script is adapted from the original works of Tang Hsien Zhu and the late Hong Kong playwright Tang Di-sheng who was considered the most prolific writer for Cantonese Opera. It has been trimmed to a two and a half hour performance.
