* Cultural Medallion Winner The Goddess of Luow is set in the epoch of the Three Kingdoms (AD 220 - 280). Towards the end of East Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220). Prime minister Cao Cao was very powerful He made use of the Han Emperor as his puppet to command the feudal princes and ministers Later, China was divided into 3 major parts : Wei Kingdom in the North under the rule of Cao Cao, Shu Kingdom in the West under the rule of Liu Bei and Wu Kingdom in the East under the rule of Sun Quan. Cao Cao had several sons but the two he loved most were the eldest Cao Pi (Zi Heng) and fourth, Cao Zhi (Zi Jian). Both the sons excelled in literary works and both aspired to succeed their father. After conquering Qi Zhou, Cao Cao kidnapped a beauty by the name of Zhen Wan Zhen. Both the sons fell in love with her but she loved only Cao Zhi gi Jian). Through the scheming of Zi Jian s teacher Chen Jiao, Cao Cao matched Zi Jian with Chen Jiao s daughter, De Zhu To reward Cao Pi for his victory at one of the battles, he agreed to the marriage between Cao Pi and Zhen Wan Zhen. On the day of double wedding, Cao Pi poured out his feelings to his wife and told her of his jealousy of Zl Jian and his intention to get rid of him in order to be the heir On the other hand Zi Jian was extremely depressed over his marnage to De Zhu. Whilst Cao Pi was asleep, Wan Zhen secretly handed Zi Jian a letter asking him to meet her in the Pear Flower Garden. At the secret meeting, Wan Zhen told Zi Jian of Cao Pi s plan to kill him. Can Pi came to the garden with Cao Cao and saw Wan Zhen and Zi Jian together. Cao Cao suspected that Zi Jian had tried to entice his brother s wife and sent Zi Jian in exile to Lin Zi City. At the same time, he pronounced Cao Pi as his heir. in the year AD 220 aver the death of Cao Cao, Cao Pi usurped the throne of the Han Emperor He declared himself The Emperor of the Wei Kingdom Still wary of Zi Jian, he forced his wife, Wan Zhen to write a letter to Zi Jian recalling him back to the capital. Wan Zhen knew of her husband s vicious plan; and in her letter, she discreetly warned Zi Jian of the danger. Zi Jian, after losing his loved one, lost all his poetic talents and failed to see the double meaning in Wan Zhen v s letter and returned to the capital. At the court, Cao Pi ordered Zi Jian to compose a poem on Brothers within a time of 10 strides All were worried for Zi Jian because he looked completely at a loss for words. Wan Zhen inspired him by smiling at him like an the good old days. By the time he had taken the fourth step he started to compose his famous " 7step poem X . He completed the poem in 7 strides instead of ten. Having felt Wan Zhen 9 s love for him he led with De Zhu, relieved and contented. Using the analogy that a building could never stand on one pillar Wan Zhen urged Cao pi to spare Zi Jian and make use of the latter ' s taents instead to help nun the State. She told him that unity was strength and that blood was thicker than water. AHer that, she jumped into the River Luo and penshed . Both Cao Pi and Zi Jian came to the River Luo to pray to Wan Zhen. Wan Zhen appeared in Zi Jian s dream and told him she had became the Goddess of the River Luo She exhorted him to unite with his brother to defend their kingdom against outside forces. Cao Pi reaiised his follies too. The two brothers heeded Wan Zhen s advice and worked together to consolidate the Wei Kingdom.
