Women Warriors of Yang Family Synopsis

The opera is based on the popular legend of “Conquest of the West by the Twelve Widows”. During the reign of Emperor Song Ren Zhong (AD 1022-1064) in the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279), a powerful barbarian tribe known as Si Xia encroached upon the territory of China. “Women Warriors of Yang Family” begins with the death of Yang Zhong Bao, son of the Matriarch, She Tai Jun aged 100, and father to 15-year-old Yang Wen Guang . Zhong Bao was embushed and assassinated by the Si Xia King. News of Zhong Bao’s death reached the Yang Family while they were celebrating his 50^th birthday at home. Without hesitation, She Tai Jun requested permission from the Emperor to lead an army to eliminate Si Xia. Mu Gui Ying forbade her son Yang Wen Guang to follow the army as he was still too young and inexperienced. She Tai Jun, however, ordered both Mu Gui Ying and Yang Wen Guang to have a duel to decided the issue. Seeing that her son was so brave and skilful in martial art, Mu Gui Ying feigned defeat, thus allowing Yang Wen Guang to join the troops. Being unfamiliar with the terrain, the Yang army did not make any headway until in a reconnaissance mission in the Hu Lu valley they met an old man who had previously guided Yang Zhong Bao. He showed them a bypass route leading to the rear of the enemy ‘s camp. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. In the ensuing battle in which Yang Wen Guang narrowly escaped death, the Yang army trounced the Si Xia army and killed its king. The Yang family thus accomplished their mission and returned triumphant.

宋仁宗年代(公元一0二二年至一0六四年)西夏无故進侵,楊宗保镇守边関抗敵,不幸在葫卢谷中箭阵亡,部將焦延贵,孟怀源,飞马回報. 適逢当天乃宗保之五十壽辰,佘太君正为他闭门祝壽.天波府内一片喜気洋洋,焦孟二人帶来噩耗,众人悲愤不己.

宋仁宗知悉宗保阵亡,十分震驚,率领王辉与寇準前往祭奠,太君自願领兵抗敵,唯是丞相王辉力主求和,大臣寇準却極力主战,仁宗正感猶疑不決,楊门众女將昂請缨,仁宗大为感动,终答允由太君领兵前往殺敵.

楊文广報仇心切,耍追随殺敵,其母穆桂英与祖母柴郡主以文广年幼,不宜同行.太君逐命文广与桂英比武,桂英喜见文广武艺精进,決意让他三分,助他随行.

楊门女將在大君率领下,殺得敵兵胆丧,西夏王撤军飞龙山,憑藉天險,坚守不攻,太君见狀,逐命桂英率众找寻栈道,直取飞龙山,还將宗保之白龙駒赐于文广,由張彪引道.

桂英帶领众人进入胡卢谷,唯是四处野霧漫漫,荆棘叢生,无法辨認,当众人正感焦急之际,巧遇曾替宗保带路之採藥老人,终於寻得栈道,直捣贼營.

西夏敵兵,被宋军重重包围,西夏王作垂死掙扎,欲以暗箭射殺文广,幸遇七娘趕至,王文见狀欲逃,被桂英阻挡去路,西夏王,王文,进退两难,终被桂英斩殺.

太君见敵營起火,率领众人前来接应,见大敵己除,逐命奏凱班師.
